Autism, Islam, and the Beauty of Routine
People say autism makes prayer difficult. I say Islam’s structure is the most autistic-friendly religion on earth.
Five prayers at specific times. A precise sequence of movements. Exact words in exact order. Clear rules.
For a neurotypical person, Islamic practice might feel rigid. For someone with autism, it’s paradise. The structure that others find constraining, I find liberating.
The Muslim community doesn’t always understand neurodivergence. Sensory overload at the mosque is real. But the actual practice of Islam? It’s as if it was designed for minds like mine.
