Are mouthwash and toothpaste halal?

Updated 6 September 2026

Toothpaste is mostly glycerin

A typical paste is an abrasive, fluoride, flavour, and a humectant. The humectant is often glycerin (E422), which can be plant, synthetic, or animal. That is the same source question as food glycerin. Plant or synthetic glycerin is treated as fine. Unnamed glycerin is why some households pick a marked tube.

Flavour oils in a paste can use an alcohol carrier, usually in small amounts. If that is your line, read the ingredients or pick a marked brand. Fluoride itself is not a fiqh dispute.

Mouthwash is the alcohol argument

Many well-known rinses use ethanol. You swish and spit; you do not drink it. One scholarly view still treats an intoxicant in the mouth as a problem. Another distinguishes rinsing from drinking and looks at whether anything is swallowed. Those are published positions. We will not flatten them into a yes.

Alcohol-free mouthwash is widely sold. If your household follows the stricter view, that is the practical shelf item — still read it for unnamed glycerin if you are being thorough.

Not medical advice

A dentist who tells you to use a specific rinse after surgery is giving medical advice. This page is not. If a prescribed rinse contains alcohol, take that to your scholar and your dentist together. Do not use a grocery article to override either of them.

Quick answers

Is fluoride a halal issue?
No. Fluoride is a mineral public-health additive. The fiqh questions on this page are glycerin and alcohol.
Does “alcohol denat.” count?
It is still alcohol used as a solvent. The scholarly disagreement is about use, not the marketing name.
What about miswak or dry brushing?
Those avoid the bottle. They are not a ruling on the bottle.

General information, not a fatwa. Where scholars differ, we try to say so. For your situation, ask a scholar you trust.
