Why this exists

Most pages answering "is E120 halal" are either a single supplement brand's blog, motivated to give you the answer that sells their product, or a forum thread with no sourcing at all. This tool tries to state plainly what's actually known: what the additive is made from, why that matters, and where scholars agree or genuinely differ, without a product to sell you.

How to read a "doubtful" result

Many additives (E471, most gelatin without certification, shellac) are doubtful not because scholars disagree on the principle, but because the manufacturer hasn't disclosed the source. An emulsifier like E471 can come from plant oil or animal fat, and nothing on the label tells you which. Where you see "doubtful" here, the honest answer is that the ingredient's status depends on information the packaging usually doesn't give you, and a halal certification mark on the product is the practical way to resolve it.

What this tool doesn't do

It doesn't scan a barcode or a photo, it's a search box against a small, manually sourced dataset. It doesn't cover cosmetics or medication ingredients specifically, though many of the same additives appear there too. And it doesn't replace asking your own scholar about your specific situation, especially where madhabs differ or where a product's actual sourcing is genuinely unclear.
