How to verify a mosque

IslamHood will not publish a mosque map. Maps go stale. A doorway you can walk to does not.
Five questions at the door
- Who owns the building — a registered charity, a private landlord, a federation?
- Who leads Friday prayer, and is that person named on a notice?
- Is there a usable route for women, or only a promise?
- Where does the donation box go, and who signs for it?
- Are the times on the door the times that actually happen?
What a website cannot tell you
A listing can give an address. It cannot tell you whether the wudu tap works, whether the side door is locked after isha, or whether last month's appeal reached the people it named. Walk once. Stay for a prayer. Read the notice board.
Money
A mosque that cannot name a treasurer is a mosque you should not fill a box in until it can. That is not suspicion of the prayer. It is how a household treats any pot it puts cash into. The Friday box is also not automatically a zakat pot — see whether zakat can fund a building.
If you are new in town
Ask a neighbour which door they use on Friday. Then go yourself. One visit beats ten recommendations that were true last year.
Quick answers
- Is every building with a dome a mosque?
- No. Some are community halls used for prayer. Ask who holds the keys and who leads.
- Do I need a certificate to pray jumu'ah?
- No. Prayer does not wait for a listing. You still need a congregation, a khutbah, and a door that opens.
- Should I donate on the first visit?
- You can. You can also wait until you know who counts the box.
