Zakat for a mosque building

Updated 6 September 2026

A household wants the new wing to go up. The appeal says zakat. That sentence is doing a lot of work.

The usual no

Zakat has a guest list. Bricks, beams, and a minaret are not on it in the reading most households were taught. On that view, the poor are waiting while the cement is poured. Sadaqah — and a named building fund — is the clean pot for the wing.

The wider reading

Some contemporary voices treat fi sabilillah as wide enough to include a mosque that a community cannot otherwise build. That is a published disagreement, not a loophole we will print as a title. If you want that reading, ask someone who will look at this mosque, this appeal, and this treasurer — not a thumbnail.

What to do this Friday

If you intend zakat, ask whether the box in your hand is for people or for plaster. If they cannot separate the pots, use sadaqah for the building and keep zakat for someone who can receive it — a neighbour, or a body you have actually checked.

Quick answers

Can zakat pay the imam?
Paying people who administer zakat is a named category. Paying an imam from zakat is a different, disputed question. Do not collapse them.
What about carpets and heating?
Those are still the building, in the view that blocks construction. Ask before you relabel a facilities appeal as zakat.
If the flyer says zakat accepted?
A flyer is a claim. Ask which view they are using, and whether a sadaqah pot exists instead.
