Is carmine in cosmetics halal?

E120 in food and CI 75470 on a lipstick ingredients list are the same family of cochineal dye. The food page on carmine covers the eating argument: most schools treat non-locust insects as not for food; some Maliki-influenced views are more permissive.
Cosmetics add a second question: is applying it to skin, especially lips you then eat from, the same as eating it? Published positions differ. Some treat external use more lightly. Some do not, because lipstick is ingested in practice. We will not pick the view that makes a prettier title.
How to read a makeup list
Look for carmine, cochineal, CI 75470, or “natural red 4”. A lot of red makeup is synthetic (for example CI 15850) and is not this issue. “Natural” on the front of the compact is not a ruling — carmine is sold as natural.
Certified and carmine-free lines exist. So do mineral tints. If your household already avoids E120 in yoghurt, the consistent cupboard move is to read the lipstick the same week, not to assume the bathroom is a different religion.
