Among people
Zakat to someone in debt
Updated 6 September 2026
The Qur'an names people in debt among those whose share is not a favour. That does not turn every overdraft into a zakat claim.
What “in debt” usually means here
A liability they cannot meet from surplus wealth — money they owe for a necessity, or a burden that will break the household if it sits. Schools differ on business debt and on debts taken for sin. IslamHood will not pick the school. We will say: if the story is “I overspent on a wedding,” ask someone you trust before you open the zakat pot.
How to give
- Pay the landlord, the clinic, or the lender if that is cleaner than cash.
- Do not attach a lecture. The category is already in the Book.
- If they also have gold sitting unused, you may have the wrong person. That is a jewellery conversation, not a slogan.
Quick answers
- Is every loan eligible?
- No. A debt for a second car they do not need is not the same as arrears on the room they sleep in.
- Should I ask to see the bill?
- If you are the one paying, you may ask enough to know it is real. You do not need their whole life.
- Can I clear only part?
- Yes. Partial relief is still relief.
